New York, New York

Our trip started Tuesday with a flight to JFK. We took a airport bus to Port Authority, and walked a few blocks to the Hotel Belvedere on 48th, near Times Square.

Wednesday we rode the subway to the Staten island ferry, which Sandi had never done. We waved at the Statue of Liberty. We took the subway, including the storied A train, to the north end of manhattan, and visited the Cloisters, a collection of art and architecture from 1100 to 1500. Some of it was quite amazing, from miniature carvings to tapestries. Then we walked to 181st, to have dinner with Richard’s college friends Malcom and Janis. We enjoyed catching up, and a view of the Hudson and the GW bridge.

Thursday we walked to Mood fabrics, and had our picture taken with Swatch, their dog mascot.  Mood Fabrics is featured on the TV show Project Runway. Sandi bought some fabric for Lena. We then started walking towards City Hall, to have lunch with Richard’s college friend Jay. We ended up on the subway, as we ran out of time. We had a nice chat and lunch with Jay; he walked us to the impressive 9/11 monument, names carved in granite, and waterfalls cascading into a pit......

We took a subway to the Guggenheim, where we saw the Hilma Klint exhibit, abstract art ahead of its time. Sandi bought the exhibit catalog. We walked across Central Park, and took the subway back to our hotel. We had a good dinner at Tratoria Trecolori. We walked 18,000 steps   that day, and were tired.

Friday we visited the Art and Design museum. Sandi was more impressed by the art than I. We walked across Central Park to the Met. Sandi met an old friend, we ate lunch, and then I wandered around the museum. I was most impressed by the special exhibit on jewelry. At 5 pm we went to an event in the armor hall, with hip hop dancers wearing armor, enacting something told as a story or myth. It was kind of fun, and certainly something different.

We headed back to the hotel, and had dinner near the hotel.

Saturday Sandi went to her conference, and I went to the Transit Museum, which I had never seen. I learned a lot of subway history, and saw some things in the museum that I remembered!  I first went to NYC in 1964, for the world’s fair.

Then I went to the Brooklyn museum, also new to me. I was most interested in the Assyrian and Egyptian exhibits. I found the museum difficult to navigate; it had a great variety of exhibits, some areas were closed, and I had not been there before.

Sandi and her business associates and I met in the lobby. I led them to a Thai place for dinner;  as it was a working dinner, I dined alone at a Turkish restaurant.

Sunday morning I took a subway and bus to Laguardia, to fly home via Charlotte. Sandi continued with the conference. My trip to Colorado was smooth. Sandi continued with her business trip.
